Family Care for Family Pets!

Prescription Policy for Internet or Catalog Sales

ABQ PetCare has a full service pharmacy with most commonly prescribed pet medications and monthly preventatives.  Most clients find this very convenient as they do not have to make another stop and wait in line to have their prescriptions filled.

At ABQ PetCare, it is our policy to take every step possible to ensure that your pet(s) receive the best pharmaceutical products available.  This is especially important with life threatening illnesses such as heartworm disease.  However, we understand and empathize with your desire to find the products at a lower cost than we are able to provide.

We do, however want your decision to be informed.  Please be aware of several areas of concern regarding catalog house prescription sales.  All major drug manufacturers maintain a strict policy of sales exclusively through licensed veterinarians.  In contrast, catalog house sales are through non- approved channels.  Most guarantees that manufacturers make regarding their products are null and void if their products are purchased through these outlets.  Pharmaceuticals manufactured and labeled for use in other countries (namely Australia) have been illegally diverted and sold through discount houses in the United States.  Buyer beware when purchasing a product from an unapproved source.

The Food and Drug Administration has cited various discount houses for violating prescribing procedures.  Pet Med Express, in particular, was recently fined over $100,000 by the FDA and Florida Department of Health.  The Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and the Texas Pharmacy Board have also recently sued this particular discount house.  Shipping charges, delays and damaged products are several other reasons that many clients feel the hassle of dealing with the catalog houses are not worth the savings.

When purchased at ABQ PetCare, these products are backed by the manufacturer and our dedicated staff.  We’ve created a team of professionals to educate you on the proper use and distribution of these pharmaceuticals, so that your pet(s) and other family members are protected.

As a general policy, ABQ PetCare does not fill prescriptions through internet or catalog pharmacies.  Written prescriptions are, however, available upon request.  The writing of prescriptions involves professional liability, veterinarian time, staff time and other resources.  We are happy to provide written prescriptions when the following criteria have been met:

  1. The requesting pharmacy must be licensed and in good standing with the New Mexico Board of Pharmacy.
  2. A current and valid veterinary-client-patient relationship exists and necessary diagnostic or safety procedures have been completed.
  3. Physical exams of the animal are current and/or the medical chart has been reviewed and the requested medication is deemed necessary with no harmful effects to the pet.
  4. Appropriate fees have been collected.  The charge for this service is $10 per prescription.
